Neethlingshof lies in the very heart of the Cape's winelands. Flanked by the Bottelary Hills and Papegaaiberg Mountain near Stellenbosch and overlooking False Bay, this beautiful, historic farm offers not only breathtaking scenery, but also a taste of traditional Cape culture blended with the best influences of Africa and Europe.
For more than a century the Estate has been synonymous with the best wine-making traditions of the Cape.
Its success over the years, which is nothing short of spectacular, can be ascribed to a variety of high potential soils derived from decomposed granite, gentle slopes and valleys offering a choice of aspects, the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean on the vineyards during the ripening season, and an altitude which varies between 85 and 250 metres.
The variety of cultivars grown on Neethlingshof (55% red and 45% white) gives the winemaker, an enviable opportunity to craft fine varietal wines and exciting blends which are winners of numerous awards:
The Neethlingshof Weisser Riesling Noble Late Harvest has been awarded the trophy as the South African National Champion Noble Late Harvest for eight consecutive years - a record in the wine industry! At the prestigious 1999 Veritas competition, Neethlingshof had 17 wine entries and received 17 awards, including a Double Gold for the 1997 Lord Neethling Pinotage and a Gold medal for the 1993 Cabernet Franc.
Neethlingshof shines as brilliantly on the international front, showing that the wines from this estate appeal to palates around the world, just as much as to those at home. The 1997 Neethlingshof Weisser Riesling Noble Late Harvest received the German Wine Institute Trophy for the Best Botrytis Wine - worldwide - at the 1998 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.
History
The history of Neethlingshof Estate spans a period of more than 300 years. In 1692 Willem Barend Lubbe, a German settler, began farming the site he had been granted by Simon van der Stel on the Bottelary Hills overlooking False Bay.
Financier Hans-J Schreiber bought Neethlingshof from the Momberg family in 1985. After his acquisition of the Estate, major renovations and improvements have taken place, including an extensive vineyard-replanting programme. In July 1999, Distillers Corporation joined forces with Schreiber to form a new company, Lusan Holdings (Pty) Ltd. Its wines are marketed worldwide exclusively through SA Wine Cellars Ltd.
Centuries after its first owner settled here, it is appropriate that the resurgence of Neethlingshof has been inspired by a fellow countryman, Hans-J Schreiber, who's quest it is to produce wines of the highest international standard.
